Testing: Cream

I am a vi lover. The first thing after configuring the os on a new computer is to download and install vi. From my perspective it is the editor with the best usability. Some may roll their eyes, as it uses cryptic acronyms for actions, like: :wq, which writes (w) and quits (q) the actual edited file or "/text" finds "text" and "#" repeats the search. But I find it very handy! :-)
Now I am going to test a branch named "cream". It's not new as development started in 2001. But I am so happy with vi (or vim), that I did not recognized it until today. I was lurking on the vi website and an announcement of a different vi-flavor called "cream" caught my eyes. The idea behind it, is to integrate 'state of the art' features more quickly. I wrote the feature list and found some very interesting.

  • Line folding :: Each set of folded lines is condensed to a single gray line.
  • Vertical selections :: Column mode enables editing on multiple lines at once.
  • Bookmarking :: Indications appear in the left margin as blue arrows
  • Word Wrap :: Wrap text at the margin or allow it to pass beyond.
  • Line numbers :: Can be turned off.
So give it a chance. But keep in mind, cream ist still on a beta level.
"Cream shapes Vim into an interface you probably already know. Whether you are writing emails or developing large software applications, Cream saves you time and gets you up and running quickly."
